Bags of style
The ‘Dress Code – Fashion Stories from The Box’ exhibition includes a number of items from our costume accessories collection, and features a section which looks at how jewellery, shoes, bags and more have been used throughout the centuries to enhance an outfit as well as communicate someone’s identity and status. These three bags can be seen on display in the exhibition and each have a story to tell.

Tiger puppet from Myanmar
This object dates from the 1800s and is one of two items from The Box's world cultures collection that has inspired Zadie Xa's 'Long ago when tigers smoked' exhibition (until 5 June).

Maps by Maurizio Anzeri
Works by Italian artist, Maurizio Anzeri can currently be seen in a range of locations throughout The Box. They give a brilliant insight into the variety of media Anzeri works with; from sculpture and drawing to embroidery and traditional craft techniques. These five maps of the world can be viewed in the Active Archives gallery and also encompass a range of materials and techniques. Read on to find out more.

People are often inspired by their mums, and artist Zadie Xa is no different. Read on to learn more about a beautiful, colourful cape that we have in our collections. It was created by Xa in 2018 and has a really personal story behind it.

Xixho by Zadie Xa
We have a beautiful exhibition on display by artist Zadie Xa (until 5 June) which uses historic items from our world cultures collection as a starting point for new work. We first became aware of Zadie's work in 2018 and were lucky enough to acquire two pieces by her for The Box's permanent collections. Read on to discover more about this one.

Plymouth’s first-ever dedicated fashion exhibition highlights centuries of stories
An exhibition, now on display at The Box, is paying homage to the city’s fashion past and future. ‘Dress Code – Fashion Stories from The Box’ (until 4 September) features garments that date back to the 1700s and accessories that date back to the 1500s, and explores contemporary conversations about identity, sustainability, shopping, design, making and craft.
